How badly a Stable-Diffusion-style AI editor's copy of your photo is broken, measured on your photo after saving it as JPEG (like social apps do). It does not measure ChatGPT, Gemini or face-swap apps.
Original
Protected
Honest note: this is a free, on-device deterrent, not a 100% guarantee. It uses a PhotoGuard-style attack (from MIT's open-source research) on a small, browser-sized copy of the Stable Diffusion image encoder and decoder. At the default setting your photo looks the same to people, and the protection score shows how much the AI's copy is broken - typically about 30-40 out of 100 (busy photos score higher). It works against Stable-Diffusion-style editors; it does not reliably stop other AI tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini, and face-detection apps can still find faces. Use it together with other habits - private accounts, fewer public close-up face photos, and reporting misuse.
How to protect a photo from AI in 3 steps
1. Choose your photo
Pick the selfie or picture you want to post. It stays on your phone or computer.
2. Press Protect
Your device adds a tiny, carefully chosen change to the pixels - usually invisible at normal viewing.
3. Download & post
Download the protected PNG and post that version on Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn or anywhere else.
Why people protect their photos from AI
Anyone can now take a photo from Instagram or Facebook and use an AI editor to change clothes, swap faces or put a person into a fake scene. These "AI photo edits" and deepfakes are used for harassment, scams and fake profiles. Photo Shield adds a layer of adversarial noise - a technique from AI-security research - so that many AI models misread the picture and their edits are less convincing.
Who is it for?
- Anyone posting selfies and family photos on social media
- Creators, artists and influencers who want to discourage AI misuse of their images
- Parents sharing pictures of children
- Professionals protecting their profile photos
Your privacy
The protection is calculated with TensorFlow.js inside your browser. Your photo is never uploaded to any server - there is no account, no API key and nothing stored. The AI model (about 10 MB) is downloaded once and cached on your device.
