How to protect your photos from AI deepfakes (2026)

AI can now swap faces, change clothes and invent scenes from a single photo. Here is what actually helps - in order of impact.

1. Share fewer high-resolution face photos publicly

Deepfake tools work best with clear, front-facing, high-resolution faces. Keep your best close-ups for private albums, and post group or wider shots publicly.

2. Make your accounts private or limit who can download

Most misuse starts with someone saving photos from a public profile. Private accounts, close-friends lists and turning off story re-sharing reduce how many strangers can collect your pictures.

3. Add an anti-AI protective layer before you post

Photo Shield adds invisible adversarial noise so many AI models misread your photo. AI edits made from a protected photo tend to look worse or broken. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser - the photo is never uploaded.

4. Remove location data

Photos can contain GPS coordinates. Most social apps strip them, but files sent directly (email, WhatsApp documents) may not. Remove metadata before sharing original files.

5. Watch for misuse and report it

Search for your name and do a reverse image search occasionally. If you find a fake, report it to the platform - most have specific forms for non-consensual or synthetic images - and keep screenshots as evidence. In many countries creating and sharing sexual deepfakes is a crime.
